FACILITY TOUR TO SILTERRA BY USM MANUFACTURING STUDENTS
Since its inception, SilTerra has been constantly providing active support to USM School of Mechanical Engineering. On 26th November 2014, a special plant tour was organized for the third year undergraduate manufacturing students under the initiative of Dato' Dr. Ahmad Yusoff Hassan. Wafer fabrication or semiconductor front end process is extremely sophisticated and rarely opened for visitors due to its exceptionally stringent control on clean room environment and process sensitiveness. SilTerra is ranked number 15 in the global ranking of leading pure-play foundries, where it serves the mature tech segment of the market valued at RM90 billion per year. Our students, accompanied also by Dr. Jamaluddin Abdullah, arrived at the Kulim facility around 1.45 pm and were briefed by the manager of external affair department. This includes the introduction to the company products such as Integrated Chips (IC) in Advanced Logic, Mixed Signal & Radio Frequency and High Voltage applications. Students were later formed groups to visit fab and other control facilities, such as waste water treatment and exhaust systems. The trip provides the students with a great experience and enhancement on their practical knowledge. Sharing of experience with the staff helps students to prepare themselves for the future career. The trip ended at 6.00 p.m. In passing, the incident where the bus has to ferrying the students through the flooded road on the way back to the campus also served as another memorable experience.

A FACTORY TOUR AND SCHEDULING WORKSHOP TO SCHLUMBERGER SEISMIC MANUFACTURING SDN. BHD.
26 mechanical degree and 14 manufacturing degree undergraduate students from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia under the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Ifishah Ramdan and Dr. Mohamad Aizat Abas were given a one-day factory tour and scheduling workshop in Schlumberger Seismic Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. (Oil and Gas Company in Autocity) on 5 November 2014. Schlumberger is the global renowned supplier in technology, integrated project management and information solutions to the oil and gas industry. The event is part of the joint initiatives by the School of Mechanical Engineering and the respective industries to provide critical earlier exposure to students in high value added manufacturing technologies and systems. In the workshop, students were introduced to knowledge of seismic acquisition, manufacturing of marine seismic equipment and land seismic equipment, fabrication process and production dispatching by Schlumberger Seismic Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd.’s Recruiting, Training & Development Manager, Mr. Ooi Cheng Yew. Sharing of experience was given by HSE Faculty and Maintenance Manager, Mr. Khiril Mohamad Isa. Students who won the quiz competition were awarded souvenirs by the company. The tour ended by 5.30pm. This one of the activities fully organized by undergraduate students as part of the initiatives to inculcate managerial soft skill in student leaders.
