Sakura Science Exchange Program 2023

NEAR Researchers from USM Deepen Ties in Neurorehabilitation Engineering through Sakura Science Exchange Program in Tokyo

Date: December 3-10, 2023

Location: The University of Tokyo, Japan

A delegation of young and aspiring researchers from the Neurorehabilitation Engineering and Assistance Systems Research (NEAR) at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), recently concluded an enlightening week-long visit to The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) as part of the Sakura Science Exchange Program from December 3 to 10, 2023.

The primary objective of the exchange program was to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration between NEAR Lab and their counterparts at UTokyo, particularly at the renowned GV Lab, specializing in biomechanics and biomedical engineering.

One of the highlights of the visit was the in-depth interaction with Professor Gentiane and members of the GV Lab. NEAR researchers had the opportunity to engage in discussions, share insights, and learn from the remarkable research being conducted by their Japanese counterparts. The exchange of ideas and expertise is expected to pave the way for potential collaborative projects in the field of neurorehabilitation engineering in future.

As part of the exchange program, a mini-symposium was organized, providing NEAR researchers with the platform to present their latest research findings. The symposium facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas, allowing researchers from both institutions to delve into the intricacies of biomechanics and biomedical engineering.

In addition to the academic engagements at GV Lab, the NEAR researchers explored the rich scientific and cultural landscape of Tokyo. Visits to prominent institutions like Miraikan (The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) and the National Museum of Nature and Science provided a unique perspective on Japan's scientific achievements and technological advancements.

The program not only strengthened academic ties between NEAR and UTokyo but also nurtured a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultural and scientific heritage of Japan. As the NEAR researchers return to USM, they carry with them a wealth of knowledge and a renewed spirit of collaboration that is poised to advance the frontiers of neurorehabilitation engineering.
