USM MECHANICAL TEAMS WON MULTIPLE AWARDS IN INNOVATE MALAYSIA DESIGN CHALLENGE COMPETITION 2020

A prototype product to reduce the electrical wastage of household clinched the top prize in SOLIDWORKS Track at the Innovate Malaysia Design Competition (IMDC) 2020 by the team from School of Mechanical Engineering, USM. Winning this title granted the team a cash prize of RM 5,000, voucher worth of RM 2,500 and a Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) exam worth of RM 2,000, a special thanks goes to CADVision Systems Sdn Bhd for sponsoring these prizes.

 

The prototype was developed by a team comprising Nga Eng Fon (3rd year), Lee Shea Wen (2nd year) and Yeo Zi Yi (final year), supervised by Dr. Teoh Yew Heng and Dr. Yu Kok Hwa from School of Mechanical Engineering. This is the third Champion Award won by the team under Dr. Teoh’s supervision at the IMDC competition since 2018. The winning entry was a project entitled ‘Smart Domestic Skeleton Switch’ which managed to defeat 4 others (1. UTM x2, 2. UTHM, 3. UPM) challengers in this category (complete list).

 

Another team was led by its advisor, Dr. Ahmad Zhafran Ahmad Mazlan from the same department, along with his student Mr. Chew Chin Siang with the project title “Active Force Control using Various Intelligent Tuning Methods to Reduce the Vibration of the Suspended Handle for Power Tool Application”, they won the consolation award under the MathWorks Track.

 

The winning teams were announced a day after the finale event on 17th August 2020. The Innovate Malaysia Design Conference event was executed via online using Microsoft teams meeting platform, which the session was moderated by DreamCatcher CEO, Dr Hor Poh Jin. The panellists of IMDC 2020 include: 1. Dato' Ng Wan Peng, COO, MDEC; 2. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. R Badlishah Ahmad, VC, UniMAP; 3. Eric Chan, VP of IoT Group, Intel; 4. Wong Keat Tze, Executive Advisor, CADVision Systems; and 5. Queenie Wong, Director, Customer Advisory, SAS Institute.

 

This year’s competition received 367 teams from 28 universities nationwide signed up to participate in the competition in various technology and application areas including integrated circuits, electronic systems, IoT, 3D modelling, Big Data, mobile & cloud apps, automotive, smart applications, green technology, bioengineering, and other tech innovation areas. A total of 59 teams were shortlisted as finalist teams to compete during the event for multiple prizes offered by industry as well as engineering professional bodies.
