SULAM Program Empowers Future Innovators Through STEM: MRSM Transkrian Students Join Product Design Seminar at USM
The School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia, hosted a seminar titled "Empowering STEM Through Product Design Technologies" on 28 May 2025. This program, conducted under the university’s SULAM (Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society) initiative, welcomed a group of 60 Form 2 and Form 3 students from Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) Transkrian. The visiting group was led by Cikgu Nirliana binti Noh.
Held at the CAD Laboratory, the seminar was facilitated by undergraduate students from the EME462: Mechanical Product Design course. The objective was to introduce school students to real-world tools and practices used in modern engineering design. Through hands-on activities and direct engagement, the program aimed to nurture early interest in STEM fields.
Three main stations were set up to cover different aspects of product development: 3D CAD modeling, 3D scanning, and 3D printing. Each MRSM group was paired with USM student facilitators who guided them through a short introduction followed by a practical activity at each station.
This initiative not only exposed young students to key design technologies but also provided USM students with a platform to share knowledge and practice leadership through peer mentoring. Programs like this reinforce the role of universities in community engagement and education outreach, in line with the goals of the SULAM framework. By connecting classroom learning with real-world tools, this seminar helped participants gain a clearer understanding of how STEM can be applied to solve problems and develop innovative solutions.
