USM School of Mechanical Engineering Enhances Teaching and Research with Virtual Reality

Nibong Tebal, Aug 1 — The School of Mechanical Engineering is pleased to announce the arrival of the Pico 4 Ultra Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, which are now available for use in teaching, learning, and research activities. This advanced VR technology enables immersive simulations, virtual design walkthroughs, and interactive problem-solving, offering a new dimension to engineering education and innovation.

Today, the department conducted its first official training session to introduce staff members to the capabilities of the Pico 4 Ultra. The system will facilitate interactive 3D simulations, virtual walkthroughs of mechanical systems, real-time visualisation of manufacturing processes, and digital prototyping. These applications provide new opportunities to connect theoretical concepts with practical experience, better preparing students for Industry 4.0 and the future of engineering practice.

The VR system is also expected to support research in key areas such as human-machine interaction, virtual factory environments, ergonomics, and process optimisation. This initiative reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to innovation, technological advancement, and future-ready education.
