TMS LITE Donates Vision Testing Equipment to Universiti Sains Malaysia
Nibong Tebal, 5 May 2025 - The School of Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Sains Malaysia (SoME-USM) has received a generous equipment donation from TMS LITE Sdn Bhd to support student learning and research in industrial machine vision. The donated equipment, including advanced lighting modules, test stations, and portable vision testing tools, is currently being delivered and installed at SoME-USM.
Valued at RM 114,700, the donation comprises a range of sophisticated vision system components such as learning stations with cameras and controllers, high-power lighting kits, multi-angle light modules, and specialized illumination demo kits. This state-of-the-art equipment is expected to greatly enhance the hands-on learning experience of SoME-USM students, particularly in the areas of vision testing and automation.
This contribution further strengthens the capabilities of the Machine Vision Lab at SoME-USM. Initially established to support the course EPE462 (now EPE461) Industrial Machine Vision, the lab also functions as a research hub for machine vision applications and optical metrology. Its core mission is to expose mechanical and manufacturing engineering students to advanced vision systems and automation technologies, which are increasingly in demand in Malaysia’s growing industrial sector.
Now under the coordination of Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Yen Kin Sam, the lab is expanding its research efforts into applied artificial intelligence, deep learning-based vision systems, and real-world applications in fields such as semiconductor manufacturing, automation, agricultural product analysis, robotic vision integration, and medical imaging. Currently, the lab hosts more than ten postgraduate and undergraduate students, both local and international, who are actively engaged in these research areas.
The Machine Vision Lab at SoME-USM remains a vital platform for innovation, industry collaboration, and the cultivation of future-ready engineers.
SoME-USM extends its sincere appreciation to TMS LITE for their meaningful contribution toward advancing engineering education and research excellence.
