USM Mechanical Engineering Students Gain Industrial Exposure at Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station

MANJUNG, 6 May 2026 – Final-year students from the Energy Conversion Systems course at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), recently participated in an industrial visit to the Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station as part of their experiential learning programme.

The visit was led by course lecturers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khaled Al-attab and Dr. Khairil Faizi Mustafa. During the session, students were introduced to the operations of a modern thermal power plant and were given the opportunity to engage in a hands-on simulation using the power plant control system, enhancing their understanding of real-world plant operation and control.

The School of Mechanical Engineering, USM expressed its appreciation to TNB-GENCG, a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, for facilitating the visit. The students were exposed to Malaysia’s largest thermal power plant, which has a total generation capacity of 4,100MW and utilises advanced supercritical steam technology, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

The programme provided a valuable learning experience that bridges academic theory with industrial practice.
