Industrial talk - Keeping It Hot (Or Not?): Heat Transfer Challenges in Oil & Gas Industries
Nibong Tebal, 16 April 2026 - The industrial talk on Keeping It Hot (Or Not?): Heat Transfer Challenges in Oil and Gas Industries, organized by ASHRAE USM Student Branch, has been held to give insights to mechanical engineering students on the applications of heat transfer in the industry, in particularly in oil and gas industries. This technical talk brings two experts, Ir. Ts. Nur Athirah Ishar and Ir. Cindy Lee Fei Fei, both from Petronas Chemicals Fertiliser Kedah Sdn Bhd, to share their experience pertaining to this topic.
In real plants, heat transfer is rarely ideal. This session walks through actual challenges engineers face, like heat or energy losses, and thermal inefficiencies, and how we troubleshoot and optimize equipment reliability and safe operation beyond textbook theory. This technical talk also share the knowledge on the mechanical equipment that are commonly installed in the oil and gas industry, including static equipment, rotating equipment and piping. Also, for heat transfer applications, insulation is important that acts as a barrier to heat flow.
