Research ACTIVITIES

Potential collaboration and consultation services for industry (Kawan Engineering Sdn Bhd) encompass the 0.2 and 0.5 tonne/hour torrefier system for biochar production, as well as gasification system for syngas production, utilizing bamboo and wood waste as the target feedstock. The main applications for these systems are power production and water treatment.

A research collaboration with PETRONAS research sdn. bhd. (PRSB) was initiated 2019 by Prof. Zainal Alimudin Zinal Allaudin, followed by 5 industrial grant/consultation projects for CO2 gasification of solid waste including petroleum coke, carbon black and plastic. The projects started with a lab-scale reactor in 2020, which was scaled up in several stages up to a pilot plant scale CO2/steam gasification for hydrogen-rich syngas production in 2025. Three schools participated in the projects including School of Mechanical Engineering: principal investigator AP Dr. Khaled Al-attab and co-researcher AP dr. Mohamad Yusof Idroas; School of Chemical Engineering: principal investigator Dato' Seri Prof. Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed and Post-doctoral researcher Dr. Ibrahim Inagi; and School of Aerospace Engineering: principal investigator Dr. Pooya Lahijani Amiri and co-researcher Prof. Dr. Farzad Ismail. The total grant budget provided by PRSB for the 5 projects was RM1.86 Million.

A potential collaboration with the Bioprocess Team, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), to provide testing services on the physicochemical properties, gasification performance, and emission characteristics of biomass pellets bound with synthetic additives for industrial applications.
